In the 1980s, Simpson commissioned a series of posters by various designers under the loose rubric of “connections.” The original poster includes this explanatory text by Chwast:

“My work day is comprised of transforming ideas into visual expression through symbolism, manipulation, transformation, and exposition. Using these same methods, I have tried to solve the problem of presenting an idealized portrait of those objects that are very important to me. They help me prepare for the day. I have integrated these ritualistic tools of washing and shaving because they have a common purpose, and that is to allow me to connect with the reality of my life.”
